Harper Hearts Hillier

I gets fwd'ed Canada Day greetings:
Just days after the leadership race ended, it looks like the Prime Minister has taken sides. Whose talking points is he aping in his Canada Day message?

July 1, 2009

Canada Day Greetings from the Prime Minister

I am delighted to extend my warmest greetings to Canadians, including the valiant members of the Canadian Forces serving in Afghanistan and around the globe, as we celebrate Canada Day 2009.

One hundred and forty-two years ago today marked the birth of one of the most peaceful and prosperous societies in the world. Our beloved Canada is a land of unparalleled opportunity and achievement. Generations of people from diverse backgrounds built this great country by embracing the values of freedom, democracy and justice.

These values have guided Canada’s history of proud accomplishments. As a result of this legacy, Canadians are optimistic, resilient and resourceful. Like many nations, we have faced a challenging year. However, as we look around the world today, we see that Canada has fared better than most, and as we look to the future Canada is poised to lead.

In 2010, we will proudly stand centre stage as we welcome the world to the XXI Olympiad in Vancouver and Whistler. The biggest and best Winter Olympic Games in history will be both a celebration of world-class winter athletes and a tribute to the tolerance, generosity and resolve that define Canada.

On behalf of Laureen, Benjamin, and Rachel and all my colleagues in the Government of Canada, I wish all Canadians a joyous Canada Day celebration.

Sincerely,

The Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C, M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada

Hudak on #3

Rumour out of the counting room is that a glitch in the Tim Hudak GOTV instructions may have cost his campaign hundreds of votes.

Apparently, Hudak voters were told that Hudak was #3 on the ballot - as in, the third down in the list of candidates - which led many to mark a number three next to his name and nothing next to the other candidates.

Since it wasn't clear just what the intent of the voter was, these ballots were disallowed.

The Ottawa Citizen notes that hometown candidate Randy Hillier is out of the race, but says:
"We changed the dynamic of the campaign," Hillier said in an interview. "We opened up the discussion... to things that political correctness wouldn't let us talk about before."

Breaking endorsement news!!!

Frank Klees supporters on the convention floor are pushing the story that Christine Elliott has endorsed their candidate, and that she has even done an autodial out to supporters with this endorsement.

Why she would endorse Klees - let alone do a phone blast out to her supporters - two days after the last vote was cast makes little sense. So little sense it obviously didn't happen.

Weak morale booster material Kleezites. And when Klees loses in a few hours, it is just going to look even worse.

Convention Update

Randy Hillier is off, and has endorsed Tim Hudak for leader on the convention floor. (Hillier had been asking his supporters to vote Hudak on the second ballot for weeks.)

The breakdown is roughly this:
Tim Hudak    3512
Frank Klees    3094
Christine Elliott    2729
Randy Hillier    1014
Several Christine Elliott campaign sources have said that their tracking shows Randy Hillier's support going heavily to Hudak on the second ballot, which would lead to a final showdown between Tim Hudak and Frank Klees on the second ballot.

The Elliott folks also say that their own supporters lean toward Hudak, which should make Tim Hudak the leader after the third ballot. But, we'll have to wait and see....

CP on ethnic nastygram

The Canadian Press is reporting on the ethnic suppression letter:
OPP asked to investigate letter alleging fraud in PC leadership race
By Maria Babbage

THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - There are fresh allegations of dirty tricks in the Progressive Conservative leadership race, and this time, the cops are getting involved.

Provincial police are investigating a letter allegedly sent to a "handful" of Tories that claims the RCMP is conducting a criminal probe into allegations of voter fraud in the race, party president Ken Zeise said Thursday.

The letter, which was sent just a few days before voting began last Sunday, seems to have been designed to intimidate voters, he said.

"We don't want to blow things out of proportion," Zeise said.

"But if one member of our party gets a misleading document that suggests they may not be able to participate in our process, we take that seriously. We want to go after whoever is responsible."

Zeise said he has no idea who sent the letter, but isn't ruling out someone from outside the party.

"I thought it was so unprofessional looking, it just didn't look real," he said. "So I don't know what his point was."

The party will conduct its own probe, he added.

The Tories started investigating the matter after two leadership campaigns complained that members had received the mailing.

Leadership contender Frank Klees, who made the complaint to the party brass, said the "disturbing" letter was mailed to visible-minority Tories.

"It's disturbing that this kind of campaigning has gone on. I think it shows desperation on the part of someone," he said.

"Anything at all that's designed to suppress the expression of new Canadians, not only as part of our party but as part of the political process, is unconscionable."

Party members don't have to be Canadian citizens, but they must be Ontario residents, Zeise said.

Things took a nasty turn in the leadership race last week when officials for another candidate, Tim Hudak, complained to the party about what they claimed were dirty tricks being pulled by Klees supporters.

The Hudak camp accused the Klees campaign of using a pollster to ask "a battery of negative questions designed to smear" Hudak, whose campaign is backed by former premier Mike Harris.

Klees denied his campaign had conducted any so-called push polling, and the party dismissed the complaint last Saturday, saying it was without merit.

Thursday was the last day for party members to vote for a new leader, who will be named Saturday at a convention in Markham, north of Toronto.

Insp. Dave Ross confirmed Thursday that provincial police are investigating, but declined to discuss details of the case.

Tim Hundal

Hot on the heels of this, it seems that another dirty trick with an ethnic twist is being used agains the Tim Hudak campaign. This time it is a bizarre autodial that is slowing working its way through the Ontario PC Party membership list.

By the time this race is over, some people may want to change their positions on the OHRC - just to save their own asses. A rough script, sent in by a loyal reader, follows:
<heavily Indian accented voice>

Hello,

My name is Mohammed Hudak.

I am calling today to ask you to vote for my brother Tim Hudak. It is very important that you choose to support my brother Tim Hudak today, so that me and all of my other many many brothers can run your Ontario PC Party.

Thank you.

Voting Day

Claire Hoy rips in to Christine Elliott:
To hear Ontario Tory leadership hopeful Christine Elliott tell it, being a red Tory, i.e. a Liberal lite, means you really care about people, while being a blue Tory, i.e. right-of-centre, apparently makes you a grouchy old coot who doesn't give two hoots about people.

As for Elliott, well, it wasn't John Tory's gender that did him in. It was his ideology. Been there. Done that. Nobody's buying.

Although one suspects McGuinty is cheering for her.
The Toronto Star just can't let go of John Tory.

Paul Synnott thinks the race has gotten a bit dirty.

The Calgary Grit endorses Randy Hillier. Has also heard rumours that there may be a candidate named Frank Klees.

And I blow kisses back at you BigCityLib.

Tim Hudak's political hero? Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Also, Lenin.

The Toronto Star says the Human Rights Tribunal is the defining issue of this campaign.

And, Stephen Taylor has a letter from party president Ken Zeise, saying the police are investigating the ethnic voter suppression letter.

Wednesday News

Christine Elliott says she is a 'compassionate conservative.'

Canadian Cincinnatus takes the boots to Christine Elliott:
Troubling news articles like this makes me wonder if Christine Elliott wants to cast herself in the "socially moderate, fiscally conservative" role, you know, the kind of politicians Canadians (we are told) can't seem to get enough of, like John Turner, Kim Campbell, Paul Martin, Ernie Eves and John Tory. After all, Canadians are defined by their moderation. They certainly won't elect "socially left-wing, economically socialist" politicians like Pierre Trudeau or Jean Chretien, let alone (gasp) unelectable "socially conservative, fiscally conservative" troglodytes like Mike Harris or Ralph Klein. These people will never win high office here!

When Christine Elliott equated the human rights commission issue with faith-based funding, she really only displayed her lack of political judgement. Faith-based funding didn't fail because it was too right wing. It failed because it was really hated by conservatives - the PC Party of Ontario's core supporters. In contrast, ending human rights commissions is something conservatives are passionate about.

The red Tory electability myth is like a phoenix. No matter how many times unprincipled 'moderate' red Tories get electorally shellacked, the moderation-as-the-key-to-winning-the-election myth rises up from the ashes.
Blogger Crux of the Matter endorses Tim Hudak.

Randy Hillier encourages you to vote responsibly

I gets fundraising emails:
From: Randy Hillier Leadership Campaign (info@randyhillier.com)
Sent: June 23, 2009 1:35:29 PM
To: Perez Hudak (perezhudak@hotmail.com)
Subject: Cheers!

Dear Friend,

Throughout the leadership campaign, I've been the only candidate to provide a strong conservative, common-sense voice for the freedom of consumers to modernize Ontario's beer and wine laws.

Now, more than ever that common sense approach is needed.

As you may have heard, as of midnight, unionized LCBO workers will be in a position to go on strike. You will not be able to purchase your favorite summer drinks anywhere in the province. It won't matter if you live in Kenora, Mississauga, or Kanata. The unions have decided that they would rather strike than allow Ontarians the freedom to enjoy their summer.

What are the union demands?

The union wants casual workers who make close to $19 and hour to get a pay increase. They want these workers to become full time unionized members paying full-time union dues. And they want to do it off the back of taxpayers.

What is the solution?

I will allow competition to the LCBO and beer stores that will ensure you are not held hostage by the unions. The government of Ontario should allow the sale of beer and wine at licensed corner stores and off sales through restaurants, hotels and bars. No longer will Ontario's be beholden to the whims of the unions.

But friends, I cannot do this without your help. There are two things you need to do that will send a clear message to unions and to other leadership candidates in this race.

1) Vote - If you haven't cast your ballot on the weekend, you have one more shot. Polling stations are open on Thursday, June 25 from 3pm to 9pm. It's a preferential ballot, so please choose freedom and mark Randy Hillier as your number 1 choice.

2) Donate - We are in the very last days of the campaign and I need your financial help to get me to the finish line. Please donate $19 to my campaign by clicking on this link. Remember, $19 is the average hourly wage of the unionized causal employees at the LCBO that are threatening your summer - your donation will help put an end to this from ever happening again.

Finally, I would like to raise my glass in thanks for support through this long campaign, unfortunately if the union gets their way any sort of celebrating this summer will be cut short at midnight. So please vote and please donate and together we can ensure the freedom that Ontario deserves.

Sincerely,
Randy
